Chancellor Alistair Darling will make an "interim" statement to the Commons on compensation for people affected by the scrapping of the 10p rate of tax.
Full details will be revealed in the pre-Budget report in the autumn.
Plus Adam Boulton will conduct a one on one interview with the Chancellor after 1630.
Watch it all on Sky News and here on the website.

...actually, what Darling giveth with one hand, Brown taketh back with both!

A Crewed attempt to buy votes back. Please, you voters in Crewe and Nantwich, don't be fooled - what Brown giveth with one hand he taketh back with the other.
This is not about the memory of the revered Gwyneth Dunwoody [who was shamefully treated by Blair] but about the good of the whole nation.

The Morning Mail
Do you actually look around you, look at your bills, look at your car tax, have any kind of non labour thinking head at all.
You seem like a man with his fingers in his ears, singing everythings great, everythings fine I love labour lalalalala.
God I hope you wake up an smell the coffee, because this lot are by far the most inept and lousy government i've ever seen.
David Cameron may prove not to be any better, could hardly be worse mind, but why do you and other labour lovers, slat him for being well off, I started on a council estate and have never had much money but dont dislike him or anyone else who has done well for themselves, its just reverse snobbery.

Morning Mail.
They are on their way out and a successful hard working business man like you, with a nice car, several properties and paying 40%tax (I can still give you my accounts contact details he will save you thousands)should be grateful.
Or is your CV rather like so many of our MPs just make believe.

Someone has pointed that Government Of All Talents has a very descriptive acronym - GOATS.
These goats believe the electorate are all sheep and may be lead anywhere.
Posted by: Victor, NW Kent 13 May 2008 17:21:49
Not before time even if it is timed politically.
It deepens the uncosted black hole in the national finances but it does redress the harm done to the lower paid workers by another act of political inspiration.
It does show, once again, that the Brown-Campbell duo are for turning and does not restore any faith in their abilities or judgement.
Posted by: Victor, NW Kent 13 May 2008 17:05:57
Steve. London.
Brown thought someone said 10 minus 10, just a silly mistake he was having a vision at the time and on the telephone to one of the talented members of the government of all the talents.
But did anyone ever actually tell us what these talented people were talented in? music, snap, fly fishing, car repairs, plumbing, jig saws, picking their noses no we just assumed they would be talented in things like government!!.
Posted by: Bruce Hulmes 13 May 2008 17:04:46
Why they did not do this originally I have no idea.
Hopefully next they will get rid of Tax Credits and use the money to increase the Personal Allowance up again.
Gordon Brown's whole tax system is a failure it needs root and branch reform. Guess we'll have to wait 2 years for that.
Posted by: Chris, Baildon 13 May 2008 17:02:04
Only labour could "fix" it in such a way that they end up borrowing a lot more money than before and still don't help the people who needed it by the relevant amount.
By jiggling the various allowances and by other measures that wouldn't really hurt anyone they could have fixed the problem completely while still making the budget overall cost less than the original budget.
But, asking labour to do the maths is a bit of a hopeless cause I guess, especially given that Gordon Brown didn't know that 10 plus 10 equals 20 (he thought it was zero for some weird reason).
Adam; ask Darling if he or Gordon Brown understands basic maths, because I've yet to see any evidence that any labour MP apart from Frank Field understands basic maths (or logic or economics), and this is just another example.
Posted by: Steve, London 13 May 2008 16:38:59
Following the announcement Frank Field, the leader of the 10p tax rebels, apologised to the prime minister for his comments questioning whether he would lead the party into the next general election.
I would have taken the idiot by the throat. Hopefully someone has. Bloody idiot. Byers, Cherie, Prescott and Levy should also hang their heads in shame!!
Well done Darling but given the help that Brown has given to the poor over the years, you shouldn't have had to do it.

What exactly is going to be the difference between the average payback and the situation if no tax change had taken place?
How do I work out how much my weekly money has been altered?
It all seems very complicated.
Posted by: Pete, Scotland 13 May 2008 16:27:18
whoops.....Mrs Balls has caught the Churchill nodding dog syndrome.....the body language of Labour tells all.
Oh God...and now it was all known in Crewe beforehand...they are a bunch of shysters.....
Please let someone take up if electoral law has been broken. High morale ground explanations about doing things promptly don't wash.
Firstly...if its wrong its wrong...period! Secondly not announcing it until Friday wouldn't have made a jot of difference.
Come on Adam...do a Paxman...take him apart....do your job. We will all be cheering you on...
Posted by: Salesman, Newcastle 13 May 2008 16:24:47
Please ask him about the 1.1 million....just because Darling wanted an average payback...he said it 20 times.....will it hit the lowest paid..?
Don't let him get away by parroting all his rubbish again...is it people earning low incomes who will lose out now or not...simple....Yes or No
If so....another Labour Con
Posted by: Salesman, Newcastle 13 May 2008 16:13:19
and they bought Frankie boy off as well.....just shows how even turkeys with "integrity" won't vote for Christmas.....
Posted by: Salesman, Newcastle 13 May 2008 15:57:12
Adam. Can you ask Darling if he would be making today's announcement if there wasn't a by-election coming up?
Posted by: Dave Wells 13 May 2008 15:42:44
Adam
Can you tell Dearest Darling to tell his mate Harriet that she looks like Churchill nodding dog.
God it's annoying....
Posted by: Salesman, Newcastle 13 May 2008 15:42:09
ANYONE REMEMBER THIS!
IN POLITICS,IF YOU WANT ANYTHING SAID ASK A MAN.
IF YOU WANT ANYTHING DONE ASK A WOMEN.
THAT IS TYPICAL OF THIS CARING SHARING GOVERNMENT WE HAVE A THE MOMENT.
ALL TALK!TALK! NO ACTION BUT I AM AFFRAID THEY DO NOT HAVE A WOMEN WITH ENOUGH GUTS TO BE THEIR LEADER.
Posted by: FROSTY MANCHESTER 13 May 2008 15:20:49
Here is an announcement from the Chancellory of the Exchequer and The Royal Mint: By Public demand we have decided to do away with the following coins 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p, it logically follows that the starting rate for Income Tax will be at 20% equal to the lowest coin of the realm. Should this logic defy you contact Conservative Central Office for what they would do were they the Government.
Posted by: Robert, Scotland 13 May 2008 15:06:57
I suspect this is a damage limitation excercise with next weeks election in mind, more waffle & empty promises with some 'caring' soundbites.
Posted by: pete, Scotland 13 May 2008 14:51:55
James
A woman leader of the Conservative Party might be a good idea. Not sure if anyone is actually up to the job. Got anyone in mind?
Posted by: Liz, Suffolk 13 May 2008 14:43:34
Please some one do somthing with the houseing market we have sat here for 6 months hoping some one will walk in the door.
I think Brown should sit in our place and see how he feels when you have no money coming in,he should be ok for the rest of his life all he cares about is himself I pray to god evrey morning he might have gone and all so his party. He was never elected so why is he there!
Posted by: Sandra 13 May 2008 14:37:32
That's nice but i really think it was time there was a change at the top. There hasnt been a woman leader in decades and i think we need that because they dont mess about and get on with doing the job.
Posted by: James 13 May 2008 14:27:11
I wonder if he will be taking advice from the honourable Michael Wilson thus far as taxing policies? mmmmmm all [Rise-Gabrielle]
Posted by: Khalid 13 May 2008 14:11:13
Even if he does come up with some solution, which is most unlikely, as he doesn't have the money to hand back.
Any money he may find has to be robbed from somewhere else.
As long as the tories continue
to "honesly", remind the public of GBs dishonesty at that budget, the people will never forget.
Posted by: neither/niether 13 May 2008 14:00:34
Why can't Darling just cancel the change and get the taxation system back to what it was before? What else has changed to prevent him from doing this? More to the point, what else has he been tinkering with.....?
Posted by: Liz, Suffolk 13 May 2008 13:52:59
This Govt has form on promises.
A slippery impression will be given now of helping the many, when the reality is they cannot even afford to help a limited few.
Mr Brown's misleading Budgets as Chancellor on the health of public finances is now coming back to haunt him.
Doubtless their hope is for this to disappear by PBR time. Some hope!
Posted by: Bill, Middle England 13 May 2008 13:30:37
Adam
PLEASE ask Darling why he doesn't simply adopt the standard sensible solution to discovery of a serious mistake - i.e. cancel the change that caused it, and return to the position as it existed before the lashup occurred.
Posted by: Trevor 13 May 2008 12:42:44
I think the best thing is to see what Darling comes up with in providing full immediate restitution for all those Pensioners and all the Poor that Brown mugged.
Similarly it will be interesting to wait and see if the NewLab Bully Boys raise their cheers again should part of the Poor get ignored or delayed again.
Just imagine the following scenario
'We won't be compensating all the Poor now, they can have fewer biscuits to dunk in their tea for another year while Brown gorges himself on the increased Petrol rake-off. Hip hip...
Let's set the Countdown Clock ticking and see what happens.
Full action now or further postponement.
Posted by: Tony, Yorkshire 13 May 2008 12:34:43
A better statement would be for Darling to tell us how many people WON'T get their money back. I'll bet there will be many more of them.
